The original Golden Horse had a 37mm diameter, a surprisingly large case for its day and was made from steel, a bold decision in an age when gold was the norm for men’s wristwatches.

In 1957, forty years after its foundation, the Golden Horse collection made its debut as an elegant yet water-resistant model and appeared with a variety of functions, bold colour dials and steel or gold-plated cases. began selling watches under the Rado brand name in the late 1950s. Expanding from its humble beginnings to become an important supplier of watch movements during WWII, Schlup & Co. watchmaking workshop of Lengnau run by three brothers. The brand we know today as Rado replica started life in 1917 as the Schlup & Co. Resurfacing in 2019 with accurate vintage details but a contemporary automatic movement, there are now four models in the 37 mm fake Rado Golden Horse 1957 Limited Edition collection and we got our hands on three of them. Reaching back even further into the brand’s somewhat sketchy past, another golden oldie materialised with the resuscitation of a 1957 dress watch known as the Golden Horse.

Not only was the Captain Cook a vintage-inspired AAA top replica watches, but it was also a dive watch, two genres that not many of us would have anticipated from Rado. And then, during Baselworld 2017, Rado surprised us with a very convincing reinterpretation of a 1962 Captain Cook model complete with 300m diving credentials. Minimalist lines, sleek profiles and silky smooth ceramic cases and bracelets have defined much of the brand’s portfolio since the 1990s. I love an enclosed case back, and that’s what you get here, along with three engraved seahorses to adorn it.Most of us associate Rado replica with design-oriented watches and innovative materials, especially high-tech ceramic. You won’t get to take a look at it, though. This means that we get the 80-hour power reserve operating at 21,600 vph Powermatic silicon hair spring movement that’s been increasingly prevalent with Rado, as well as its Swatch Group siblings. Being under the umbrella of the Swatch Group, Rado uses an ETA C07.611 movement, which is a take on the 2824. Where things are thoroughly modern here is with the movement. Hats off to Rado for its execution of the bracelet.

The brushed folding clasp is adorned with - you guessed it - two seahorses. The high polish might be a scratch magnet down the road, but that’s not a consideration that substantively takes anything away from it. It looks, feels, and wears like a bracelet that costs more than the sub-$2,000 price of the Golden Horse. Speaking of which, the polished grains-of-rice bracelet is very well done. I also think the bracelet does a lot for the watch in this regard, as the leather strap on the previous red-dial Golden Horse did make it wear smaller. The Golden Horse is a smaller watch for sure, especially by contemporary standards, but the proportions make it look just right on my 7.5 inch wrist. The 37mm-wide and 10.8mm-thick case would ordinarily be a bit too small for me (though I’ve increasingly been appreciating sub-40mm watches as of late), but the 40.9mm lug-to-lug measurement confirms what I felt as I wore it.
